When people book a hotel room the price is often way more important than the fact that the hotel is or isn’t environmental friendly. A lot of hotels don’t see the benefits of profiling your hotel as green. Big prestige hotels like Hilton or Mariott do have advantages by having a green image.
Mariott uses solar heating (panels), eco-friendly air conditioning and tries to reuse its water. Hilton New York has installed a commercial fuel cell power system that is three times as efficient as the electrical grid. On the Hilton site you can see Hilton wants to work SUSTAINABLE:
1. Reduce carbon reduction with 20%
2. Reuse energy saving 388M in only four years with LightStay
3. Reduce waste & garbage e.g. Global Soap Project (recycling soap bars)
4. Water reduction by using efficient showers and using rain water
5. …
These big hotel chains can afford to invest in these big things, smaller hotels can’t. With small investements you can save a lot of money too though. Radisson Edinburgh switched to energy-efficient lights. The costs were $2,307. The first year they saved up to $27,889.
The best way to advertise these kind of things is to do it subtle. You don’t want to brag about it and you don’t want to look like you are doing it to gain profit. So don’t send big advertising campaigns into the world claiming you are green. Informing the press can be a good way to gain media attention and getting to your customers in a subtle way.
